mozart | boutique hotel | a stone's throw away from mozart's birthplace
mozart's music and the respect for his exceptional gift as a musician prevents us from treating his person in an ostentatious way ("the pencil in god's hands" - that's how nikolaus harnoncourt expressed his admiration for mozart).
mozart in the city of salzburg
wolfgang amadeus mozart, who is nowadays ubiquitous in our town, was born on 27 january 1756 just down the street, in the house at getreidegasse 9. the historian robert hoffmann describes the fact that mozart was only discovered after his death by smart businessmen for primarily pecuniary reasons "the history of an appropriation".
in his lifetime mozart found the city of salzburg to be too confining on account of the archbishop who dominated the city and its inhabitants in a strict and thrifty way.
mozart's friends in the art hotel "blaue gans"
mozart did a lot of travelling to develop his artistic potential. he sent letters to his friends in salzburg, amongst them paula däubl and johann paul huetterer, both of them former colleagues from the court orchestra. both of them, who were owners of part of the "blaue gans" (the house karajanplatz no. 4, the so-called "däublhaus"), are mentioned in 18 letters. again and again mozart emphasizes that he holds them in high esteem and assures them of his friendship. most probably they were also guests in mozart's house as he asked them to give "thresl", the devoted kitchen maid, his best regards.
mozart projects
in the "mozart year" 2006 we invited the artist irene andessner to take part in this project. she seized the opportunity and created her "transformance project" i.a. mozart (?), a critical analysis of the image of mozart throughout the epochs. andessner added another portrait of mozart to the large number of unverified ones, that of a woman (?).
the viennese artist duo deutschbauer/spring analyzed the hype of the mozart year 2006 and found a suitable setting for their performance "jedermanns mozart in the blaue gans" in our art hotel as part of the series "referat mozart 2056".
mozart without kitsch!
an absolute must-see is mozart's birthplace with newly designed exhibition rooms and installation art created by robert wilson (with blue geese (!) to portray mozart's spirit!) and also the salzburg-based architect thomas wizany. a visit to mozart's residence on the other side of the river salzach is also highly recommendable. both museums are only a short walk away from our boutique hotel.
around the time of mozart's birthday the international foundation mozarteum organizes the mozart week. on the occasion of this anniversary, tribute is paid to mozart and his music. it also shows his influence on the history of music and on contemporary composers.
